| New Poll: Americans Want to Pay Teachers More—and Fire The Bad Ones |

Interestingly the poll found that 78 percent think it should be easier for school officials to fire poorly performing teachers. Yet overall, the public wants to reward teachers for superior performance. Fifty-seven percent say they are paid too little, with just seven percent believing they are overpaid and the rest of survey respondents believed they are paid fairly. "Good teachers are hard to find, and one of the reasons they are hard to find is because they're not paid enough to support themselves, especially if they have a family," said one survey respondent. "There are very good teachers out there, but there comes a day when they need to retire and they don't and what happens at that point is the kids suffer." The statistics are similar for school principals. Seventy-one percent of survey respondents believed school administers should be fired for underperforming students in their schools as well. According to the poll, although 35 percent believe bad teachers are the problem in American schools, 45 percent say teachers' unions are to blame. This is yet another blow to union clout as now average, everyday Americans are wising to the union roadblocks in education. As education reform receives additional national attention from documentaries and pundits, the public will undoubtedly start developing strong opinions about who is to blame for underperforming schools.
