Union Legislation National Developments

Currently states in every part of the country are in various stages of passing their own laws as the protests and debates rage on. The national unions and their state counterparts are on the defensive, organizing large ballot initiative campaigns and considering increasing their dues to pay for their efforts to preserve their monopolies. Member Mention: New Jersey Teacher to Earn Special Education Certification with AAEF Scholarship

Ms. Danielle Blakely, a teacher at the Ethical Community Charter School in Jersey City, was awarded a scholarship by the Association of American Educators Foundation to continue her education and pursue a special education certification. The funding will offset the costs of books and classes for the Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program at Caldwell College. AAE Director of Professional Development Jill Newell was on hand to deliver her certificate personally.

A public charter school in St. Paul, Minnesota has been gaining national attention for its innovative vision and spin on learning. The Avalon School is a teacher-run school with no administrators, secretaries or even librarians. Charter Schools Serving as Models for Other Public Schools

Charter schools were designed as a "research and development" outlet for public schools. Operating on state funds, public charter schools have been able to implement new ideas for their students and teachers without having to follow the same rigid structures of some public schools.
