Charter Schools Serving as Models for Other Public Schools

Charter schools were designed as a "research and development" outlet for public schools. Operating on state funds, public charter schools have been able to implement new ideas for their students and teachers without having to follow the same rigid structures of some public schools. The U.S. Department of Education is now conducting a feasibility study on ways to support the spread of promising charter school practices across the country.

During Education Nation on NBC last month, President Obama recommended lengthening the school day and year as a potential solution to our children falling behind. The suggestion inspired praise from some reformers and critique from others, citing more expenses and stringent union contracts. Are longer days and shorter summers the wave of the future for students and teachers?

It should come as no surprise that teachers unions are putting up big bucks to support partisan politics this election cycle. Along with countless millions, the unions are pushing their "get out the vote" campaigns in some interesting ways during early voting this week. In Nevada, representatives from the teachers union are allegedly handing out Starbucks gift cards in exchange for a vote for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
 
Addressing the Bullying Epidemic in Schools

In the wake of two recent suicides in connection to bullying, school systems across the country are reevaluating their policies relating to school discipline and harassment. Students can be overloaded with academic studies and family pressures; no adolescent needs incessant taunting and harassment by the school bully.
